Just 19kms north of Bega is the stunning Brogo Dam, which is contained within the Brogo wilderness area and the southern section of Wadbilliga National Park.
Brogo National Parks
The park protects rugged coastal escarpment and plateau areas surrounding the Wadbilliga, Tuross and Brogo Rivers. The Brogo Dam is situated in the southern region of the Wadbilliga National Park and offers picnic facilities and a ramp from which to launch your canoe or boat. Power boats are also welcome in the area. You can hire canoes to explore the Dam and gain access to remote pockets of bushland.
Flora and Fauna
Explore tranquil rainforest gullies, and the rugged picturesque surrounds. Sheer cliffs overhang the water with rock orchids and ferns, while the surrounding bush harbours many native birds and animals.
The waterways are pristine, with gorges rising 180 feet high in Nelsons Creek. The peaceful backwaters are a haven for local native birdlife – Sea eagles and swooping Azure Kingfishers & many more. Imagine nothing to be heard but the sounds of piping bird calls and the splash of a paddle moving through still water. Discover Water Dragons, Goannas, and shy Echidnas, see the Rock Orchids clinging to sheer cliffs, (flowering in September), or the rare Deua Eucalypt and Sandpaper Figs.
Brogo Permaculture Gardens showcase sustainability and more in a famous, well-established estate.
While the locals would like to keep this a secret, there are big bass hiding out in the Brogo Dam, and the storage has been stocked with trout. Fishing is best done on the water by canoe or boat, as the rugged foreshores are generally inaccessible.
Rising barometric pressure can really bring bass on the bite, while falling pressure can make them very hard to catch. All the fishy haunts along the edges of the dam are places where to work to entice a bass to strike. The most enjoyable and heart-stopping way to fish for bass in the dam is on lures or fly. You just can’t beat the excitement when a bass, even a small one, hits a lure
