Balnhdhurr – A Lasting Impression

Sunday 24th June, 2018 - Saturday 8th September, 2018

In a remote corner of Arnhem Land sits Yirrkala Print Space, where, for over twenty years, the ancient craft of printmaking has not only survived, but prospered.

With works from 50 artists, this exhibition includes historically significant prints. The Berndt Etchings series talks about the Berndt Crayon Drawings of Yirrkala, produced by the artists’ predecessors in 1947, while String Figure Prints are a response to another archaeological collection from 1948. P

Some pieces reveal the impact the introduction of bright acrylics had on artists, which allowed them to explore a whole way of storytelling in a joyous explosion of colour and expression.

This celebratory exhibition is presented by Artback NT in association with Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre.

Whale tails in Merimbula on the Sapphire Coast

Whales play on the Sapphire Coast.

George Bass Marathon

Monday 31st December, 2018 - Sunday 6th January, 2019

George BassThis is the longest, toughest surfboat race in the world!

Teams and single ski paddlers undergo a gruelling seven days on the open ocean, covering 190km’s of the coastline between Batemans Bay & Eden and contending with variable and wild surf conditions to launch and land their boats. They are elite athletes, skilled lifeguards and adventurers at heart.

The very first Bass was run in 1975 and was the brainchild of Bega Newspaper editor Curly Annabel who wanted to trace the journey of early explorer Surgeon Commander George Bass in 1797.

Surgeon Commander Bass with a crew of 6-navel oarsman rowed a longboat not unlike surf’s original double-ended clinker from Port Phillip down the NSW coast and around the southern end on Victoria mapping the coastline as they went. Annabel was at first thought mad and received no support, until then NSW State Secretary and Cronulla boat sweep, the legendary Nick Dixon, took up the cause and the rest, as they say, is history.
