TASTE THE FLAVOURS

Taste the flavours of Eden, where you will find some of Australia’s finest producers of fresh seafood and other delicacies. Almost all of this produce is available for purchase in Eden and Eden Visitor Information Centre staff are only too pleased to guide you to the appropriate vendors.

Oysters

Eden sits between two lakes that produce the famous Sydney rock oyster, a species native to Australia. The pristine waters of Wonboyn and Pambula lakes produce some of the South Coast’s best oysters, regularly winning gold medals at the Sydney Fine Food Show. Wonboyn Lake has eight oyster farms with leases covering 51.3ha. More than 130,000 dozen oysters, valued at around $1 million, were supplied to the Sydney restaurant market in 2016–17. For an up-close oyster experience, cruise beautiful Pambula Lake and learn about the fascinating world of the oyster farmern or visit the oyster sheds or take an oyster tour. Oysters can be purchased from South Coast Fish Processors, and enjoyed at several cafes and restaurants in and around Eden.

Fish

South Coast Fish Processors unloads approximately 1900 tonnes of fish from local and visiting fishing vessels each year, processing 200 tonnes of value-added product for local and regional outlets. Fresh fish and other seafood can be purchased locally from South Coast Fish Processers retail outlet located at the wharf in Eden, and can also be enjoyed at local take away’s and restaurants.

Abalone

Abalone is an edible sea snail with a distinctive mother-of-pearl shell. It is a relatively expensive delicacy, much sought-after by cuisine connoisseurs in many parts of South-East Asia where most of the abalone product from Eden is sent.

Disaster Bay Chilli

Disaster Bay Chillies has collected multiple awards in Australia, the UK and USA for its internationally recognised products. Organically grown chilli products such as hot chilli wine, chilli chocolates, exotic sauces and liqueur jellies are available through local outlets and at the Eden Visitor Information Centre. Chilli wine is available at Eden IGA, Southern Cellars and the Great Southern Inn bottle shop.

North of Eden Distillery

The multi award-winning artisan distillery is nestled in the rolling green hinterland of Australia’s pristine Sapphire Coast. All of their spirits are created using old-school artisan methods and their gins feature ingredients that they either grow at the distillery or forage locally. One of the things that sets North of Eden apart from other distilleries is that they make their spirits on technology that dates back over 1200 years and as one of the smallest commercial distilleries in Australia, their spirits really are handcrafted in small batches.

Visit the North of Eden Cellar Door at Stony Creek (just past Bega) for a tasting and some amazing cocktails (you can even BYO nibbles or picnic to make the most of it and soak up the atmosphere), or prebook a gin school session. The North of Eden internationally award winning range can also be purchased across the Sapphire Coast at all good bottle shops.

Specialty Produce

The fertile soils surrounding Eden attract a large number of macro farmers and food producers. Local specialty products include award-winning cheese and dairy products, organic produce, olives and nuts, free-range meat and poultry products, creative preserves and natural beauty products.
