Drive through unspoilt forests to our best galleries, sampling local fare and exploring secluded coastal vistas along the way. Fringed by the coastal villages of Bermagui and Tathra, this 44 kilometre drive is an unforgettable art and food experience on the Sapphire Coast.
The Coast Road Art Trail takes in the very best studios and galleries and eateries which specialise in amazing location and local produce. The road itself is a guide through some of our most beautiful landscapes. It curls from the rugged cliffs of Tathra through the dappled, green light of Mimosa Rocks National Park, across one-lane timber bridges, deserted beaches and serene lagoons.
Bega Valley Regional Gallery is 30 kilometres from Tathra or Merimbula, or 60 from Bermagui. It has huge program of regional and national exhibitions including the 2016 Archibald Prize in April and May of 2017.
The Wharf Locavore, Tathra
Sisters Poppy and Emma Benton have created a unique coffee bar and local contemporary gallery featuring painting, sculpture, ceramics, metal, jewellery, prints, textiles and objects. The food is trumped only by the views and the sounds of the ocean lapping at the piers below.
Open from 8am daily, closed Mondays outside of summer.
Ivy Hill Gallery, Wapengo
Ivy Hill Gallery is located on a farm, midway between Tathra and Bermagui in the fertile Wapengo valley. The views from the gallery across the paddocks to Mumbulla Mountain, are spectacular. Each month the gallery shows a new exhibition of contemporary art. Ivy Hill specialises in showcasing regional artists, both accomplished and emerging. It has been a labour of love for hosts Bill and Carolyn Killen who bought and renovated the old farm house in 2001.

Mimosa Wines and Drystone Restaurant
The restaurant was designed by one of Australia’s best-known architects, Daryl Jackson and sits on a 200 acre property surrounded by vines and national parks. You can sample the wine at the cellar door, or dine on the deck overlooking the mountains. The menu showcases local, seasonal produce including fish, meat, cheeses and vegetables, much of it organic. Owners Glenn and Gail Bustson have called it home for more than 30 years and are very welcoming hosts.

Four Winds, Baragga Bay
Best known for its biennial Easter music festival, Four Winds is about more than just exquisite music. Set on 30 acres of open woodland it’s purpose built concert hall, Windsong Pavillion was designed by architect Clinton Murray. The heart of the beautiful open air amphitheatre, the Sound Shell, was designed by architect Philip Cox. Four Winds has a year round program of world class music-in-nature experiences.

The Bermagui Oyster Room
Oyster farmer Shane Buckley opened the Oyster Room as a farm gate and dine-in restaurant to showcase his wild, organic Wapengo Rocks oysters. The oysters are hand selected and are prepared in a myriad of ways, included bottled and picked to take home. Licensed and BYO, the Oyster Room doubles as an informal gallery for a range of artists.

Bermagui Gelati Clinic
Alberto Cementon, a former geophysicist who holidayed in Bermagui as a child, and his wife Francesca converted an old vet clinic into a cool haven for the tastebuds. Drawing on the region’s rich dairying and fruit growing talents, the Gelati Clinic uses traditional methods, imported Italian equipment and individual recipes to to create authentic gelati.
Opening hours in winter are 10am to 5pm and in summer 10am to 7pm.
Horse and Camel, Bermagui
A small, intimate wine bar, delicatessen and coffee lounge overlooking a small intimate harbour. The wine list has the simplest quaffing wines to some greats from the region and around the world. Choose from a delicious range of plated antipasto, pate, cheese or dips (or Il Passagio pizza). There is also great coffee. Owners Bruce and Janika are enthusiastic hosts who love their Bermagui life.

Il Passagio, Bermagui
A simple and seasonal Mediterranean menu, abundant in fresh local ingredients. Do try the honorbread, a daily baked artisan sourdough named in the SMH good food guide best bread & butter 2015. Knowing the growers, the fishermen & the farmers gives great insight to the product we are preparing. Hosts Tim and Honor Northam have close relationships with the fishermen and growers who supply their food and run sourdough cooking classes throughout the year.
Open for dinner Thursdays to Sundays from 6pm, seven days in January. Bookings are advised.
